Remove limitations for growth

Today's solid CRM systems are built upon the adaptable and scaleable Microsoft SQL database system so the use of a desktop database limitation is removed.  Be careful to select a CRM solution who's database is well supported so that you can easily migrate to newer, faster and more capable server operating systems.  

If you have a cloud-based, subscription CRM it can be very difficult to get your data exported in a useful format. There are reported cases from Salesforce.com former customers where this was impossible and only flat files were provided thus adding to the migration costs to a new and different CRM system.   Also be aware of the growing size of your CRM database.  Some hosting platforms get rather expensive when you need additional disk space.

Other limitations for growth can occur for a CRM application that cannot be expanded for new entities/tables. You may not be able to extend an existing table or add new custom tables with additional information specific to your business need.   There may also be limitations to the CRM software capabilities such as lack of security for selling teams, lack of field level security, lack to modify or apply new business rules.
